Climate change is one of the most urgent and complex challenges of our time. It requires collective awareness and individual action to limit greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the consequences of warming.
But how can we inform and train ourselves on such a vast and technical subject? Can artificial intelligence (ChatGPT and the like) help the cosmetics sector?
This is the question that ClimateQ&A tries to answer, a French initiative that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to answer the most common questions about ecology. ClimateQ&A is a free online platform, open to all, where users can ask questions about climate change and get clear, “reliable” answers.
ClimateQ&A: an intelligent chatbot on climate
ClimateQ&A is not a simple search engine that points to websites. It is a chatbot, a conversational agent that interacts with users in natural language, using the technology of ChatGPT, a large-scale language model developed by OpenAI.
ChatGPT can generate coherent and relevant answers, acknowledge its mistakes, challenge incorrect statements or refuse inappropriate requests. Trained on text data from the internet, it has general knowledge of the world. But ChatGPT is not infallible: it can sometimes produce incorrect or biased answers.
This is why ClimateQ&A does not rely solely on AI: the platform also calls on climate experts, who verify the answers generated by ChatGPT and correct them if needed.
A reliable, scientific source of information
ClimateQ&A relies on scientific, reliable sources to provide precise and verified answers, based on the official reports of bodies recognised for their climate expertise (IPCC, IEA, IPBES, etc.).
The platform covers varied themes, such as:
- greenhouse gas emissions
- the greenhouse effect
- global warming
- the melting of ice
- environmental impact
- sea level rise
- biodiversity
- renewable energies
- the carbon footprint
The goal is to raise public awareness of the challenges of climate change and help understand its causes, consequences and possible solutions.
ClimateQ&A is led by Ekimetrics, a French company specialising in digital transformation, to put AI at the service of ecology and climate.
AI, a useful tool for the cosmetics sector?
The cosmetics sector is one of those with a significant environmental impact. According to Planetoscope, 3,500 euros of cosmetic products are sold every second worldwide. Their production, transport, packaging and use generate water, air and soil pollution and significant resource consumption.
Many cosmetics contain synthetic ingredients harmful to the environment: plastic microbeads in some scrubs take centuries to degrade and are ingested by marine animals, while some sunscreens contain substances that contribute to coral bleaching.
Faced with these challenges, the cosmetics sector must commit to an ecological transition: better knowledge of products’ environmental impacts, optimised design and packaging, more responsible use of resources and consumer awareness.
ClimateQ&A can be a useful tool to support this transition, helping players inform themselves about climate change and train on good practices to reduce their ecological footprint.
